The House of Representatives has appointed Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka (APC, Ogun) as the new Deputy Chief Whip. His appointment followed the passing of the former Deputy Chief Whip, Rep. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, in January 2025.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, announced the decision during Tuesday’s plenary session after consultations with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and key stakeholders from the South West.
“Following consultations with the APC Caucus and other stakeholders, the Leadership of the House has received and accepted the recommendation of Honourable Isiaka Ibrahim to serve as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives,” Speaker Abbas stated.
Rep. Isiaka, who represents Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency of Ogun State, previously served as the Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development. A ranking member since 2015, he has also held notable roles, including Chairman of the Committee on Ecological Funds, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Governmental Affairs, and leadership positions in various Ad Hoc Committees.
While announcing the appointment, Speaker Abbas paid tribute to the late Rep. Onanuga, highlighted her dedication and contributions to the House.
“Let’s take a moment to remember Honourable Onanuga’s invaluable contributions to this House and to her nation. May her soul rest in peace. We congratulate Honourable Isiaka Ibrahim on this well-deserved elevation and trust that he will bring the same dedication and commitment to his new role as he has demonstrated in his service to this House and to his constituents,” the Speaker added.
The new Deputy Chief Whip is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining legislative order and discipline within the Green Chamber. His extensive experience in both the private and public sectors positions him as a valuable asset to the House Leadership.
The House Leadership has expressed confidence in Rep. Isiaka’s ability to effectively carry out his duties, urging all members to continue working together in service to the Nigerian people.
