The House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, described him as a towering statesman whose life epitomized discipline, national service, and democratic progress.
In a statement released by the Office of the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the House extolled Buhari’s leadership across two defining eras in Nigeria’s history as a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a two-term democratically elected President (2015–2023).
“The passing of former President Buhari marks the end of an era defined by discipline, devotion to national service, and a firm commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions,” the statement read.
The House praised Buhari’s constructive engagement with the legislature during his presidency, highlighting significant achievements made possible through executive-legislative collaboration. Among these was the historic restoration of the January–December budget cycle and the signing into law of key reforms such as the Petroleum Industry Act (2021), Companies and Allied Matters Act (2020), and several annual Finance Acts.
Also noted were landmark constitutional amendments signed by Buhari in March 2023 that deepened federalism by granting states increased autonomy over power generation, railway operations, and judicial administration.
Other legislative milestones during his tenure included the Not Too Young to Run Act (2018), which empowered youth participation in politics, and the designation of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honour of Chief MKO Abiola.
The House also acknowledged the former President’s role in establishing a legal framework for social welfare through the National Social Investment Programme Agency Act, institutionalising programs like N-Power and TraderMoni for the benefit of vulnerable Nigerians.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, in a condolence message, said;
“The news of the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari was shocking to me. But we cannot question our Creator. All mortals shall taste death. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”
He further described the late President as “an officer and statesman who made a name for himself as incorruptible and lived a life defined by simplicity and a remarkable absence of materialism.”
On behalf of the 10th House of Representatives, the Speaker extended condolences to Buhari’s widow, H.E. Hajiya Aisha Buhari, his family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
The House concluded its tribute with a call to uphold Buhari’s enduring legacy of public service, moral integrity, and institutional reform.
