Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly stealing an Uber car from its driver through deception.
This was disclosed by the spokesman of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
The incident, reported by an unnamed Uber driver to the Akinpelu Police Division on July 5 around 8:00 p.m., unfolded when the driver picked up a passenger named Isaiah from the NNPC Filling Station in Maryland. Isaiah requested to be taken to a hotel in Oshodi.
During their stop at the hotel, Isaiah treated the driver to a meal of pepper soup and an energy drink. At one point, while ostensibly searching for a cotton bud to clean his ear, Isaiah asked for the car key. Trustingly, the driver handed it over.
After receiving the key, Isaiah left the hotel premises in the driver’s Toyota Corolla, which was parked nearby.
Police officers conducting a routine stop and search on Boladale Street later intercepted Isaiah in the vehicle. Unable to provide satisfactory proof of ownership, Isaiah was promptly arrested.
Fortunately, the Uber driver, who had been searching for his missing car, arrived at the scene and identified his vehicle. Isaiah remains in police custody pending further investigation into the incident.
