An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Olori Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdulahi Fasasi, who were arrested in connection with the tragic Christmas funfair that led to the deaths of 35 children in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The court’s decision was delivered by Justice K. B. Olawoyin on Monday, following a hearing where the trio’s bail applications were considered. The accused individuals, including the founder of Agidigbo FM, Hamzat, and Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, are facing charges of conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failing to provide adequate security and medical facilities during the event.
Recall that the incident occurred on December 24, 2024, during a Christmas funfair held in Ibadan. Reports revealed that the event, which was intended to provide entertainment and charity for local children, turned into a deadly disaster when overcrowding led to a stampede, resulting in the tragic loss of 35 young lives. The funfair, organized by Olori Naomi, was seen as an opportunity to bring joy to underprivileged children during the holiday season. However, inadequate security and a lack of emergency medical services at the venue led to chaos, and the event quickly spiraled into a tragedy.
In the wake of the incident, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi had earlier ordered the accused to be remanded at Agodi Correctional Facility pending further legal proceedings. The Department of Public Prosecution of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice was instructed to provide advice on the next steps in the case.
The trio now facing a four-count charge relating to their involvement in the event. The court’s bail ruling came after a tense period of uncertainty following their arrest, with many questioning the safety measures taken during the event and whether those responsible acted negligently.
