The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has declared open a high-level Executive Leadership Retreat for senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in a renewed push to consolidate ongoing reforms and strengthen institutional capacity.
The retreat, which is taking place at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, brought together Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) from across the country. It is being hosted by the Police Reform Secretariat in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme as part of efforts to drive accountability and transformation within the Force.
Addressing participants, the Inspector-General described the retreat as a critical component of his leadership agenda, emphasizing the need for visionary leadership, accountability, and public trust at the highest levels of policing. He stressed that the outcomes of the engagement must translate into measurable improvements in operational efficiency, discipline, and adherence to human rights across all commands nationwide.
Earlier in the session, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat and Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Olu Ogunsakin, highlighted significant milestones recorded under the Supporting Police Accountability and Transformation (SPAT) programme. The initiative, supported by international partners, has delivered key reforms including a comprehensive review of the national police recruit curriculum the first since 1968 and the development of a modern, rights-based framework enshrined in the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Regulations 2025.
The retreat also featured technical sessions focused on evidence-based budgeting, community policing strategies, and digital transformation, reflecting a broader commitment to reposition the Nigeria Police Force as a professional, service-oriented institution guided by global best practices.
As the two-day engagement continues through March 25, the police leadership reaffirmed its appreciation to the UNDP and other development partners for their sustained support in strengthening Nigeria’s policing architecture and advancing reforms aimed at building public confidence.
