The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has commissioned the Lagos State Police Command Band, described the development as a major step toward strengthening the institutional capacity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the IGP said that leadership progress is often reflected in thoughtful and impactful decisions that reinforce structure, identity, and discipline within an organisation. He noted that the establishment of the band corrected a long-standing structural gap in the Lagos State Command, which had previously depended on the Force Headquarters Band for ceremonial engagements.
Egbetokun highlighted the long-standing contributions of the Nigeria Police Band to projecting a positive image of the Force through musical excellence, consistency, and professional conduct. According to him, the band has played a vital role in enhancing public confidence, improving ceremonial dignity, and promoting the ideals of the Police across the country.
He further explained that beyond entertainment, the Police Band serves as a symbol of unity, discipline, and institutional culture, inspiring both officers and members of the public. He added that its reputation has attracted young officers and newly graduated cadets who aspire to uphold its standards.
The IGP stated that the commissioning of the Lagos State Police Command Band forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen command-level development and professionalism. He stressed that effective policing must be supported by strong institutional frameworks that promote cohesion and pride in service.
Commending the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, and the command leadership, Egbetokun praised their initiative and commitment in addressing a long-standing institutional need. He also referenced his recent visit to the command for the foundation-laying ceremony of its Multi-Purpose Hall, describing both projects as evidence of sustainable leadership and forward planning.
He urged Commissioners of Police nationwide to adopt a proactive leadership approach by identifying structural gaps, building capacity, and strengthening institutional identity in their respective commands.
Addressing members of the newly inaugurated band, the IGP charged them to maintain exemplary conduct, discipline, and professionalism, noting that as pioneers, they would determine the reputation and future standards of the unit.
He also acknowledged the efforts of officers and personnel whose behind-the-scenes contributions made the establishment of the band possible, describing their commitment as vital to institutional growth.
The IGP concluded by formally commissioned the Lagos State Police Command Band for official use and service to the Nigerian public, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to professionalism, institutional excellence, and public trust.
