The Nigeria Police Force has announced the reactivation of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) issuance nationwide, as part of renewed efforts to enhance transparency, security, and public trust in law enforcement processes.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed that the initiative was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
According to the statement, the permit will now be processed exclusively through a secure digital platform; https://www.possap.gov.ng which is designed to eliminate human interface, ensure proper documentation, and promote a user-friendly application process. The reactivation was coming amid growing public concerns over the harassment of motorists with factory-fitted tinted windows by security agents.
The statement emphasized that while tinted windows are standard in modern automobile manufacturing, they have often been exploited by criminal elements for kidnapping, armed robbery, “one-chance” activities, and other forms of organized crime. The move, therefore, seeks to strike a balance between citizens’ convenience and the need for public safety.
Applicants are now required to undergo a verification process using their National Identification Number (NIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric data, and background checks. A unique QR-coded digital permit will be issued to approved applicants within 72 hours of successful registration.
To facilitate compliance, the Police have approved a 30-day grace period starting from May 1, 2025, after which full enforcement will begin. The statement further warned that any officer found extorting or harassing motorists under the guise of TGP enforcement will face disciplinary action.
“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the Force’s commitment to a technologically driven and citizen-focused policing strategy. He urges the public to embrace the initiative in the interest of safer roads, enhanced public trust, and a more secure Nigeria,” the statement added.
This development is expected to improve accountability and ease the burden on law-abiding motorists, while supporting national efforts in combating crime across the country.
