The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to press freedom and the protection of civic space in a democratic society. This reaffirmation came during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, to the IGP at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The visit underscored the importance of fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the media to enhance transparency, accountability, and the dissemination of factual information to the public.
Mallam Ndace, while commending the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, acknowledged the proactive efforts of the police in ensuring public safety and order. He also stressed the need for joint efforts to combat disinformation and misinformation, which could distort public perception of the police and national security efforts.
In his response, IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude for VON’s support and emphasized the critical role of responsible journalism in shaping public confidence in security agencies. He assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains open to strategic partnerships with the media to curb the spread of fake news and promote accurate reporting.
The IGP further noted that the police will continue to uphold democratic principles, ensuring that journalists operate in an environment free from harassment while maintaining the balance between press freedom and national security.
The Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism, integrity, and improved service delivery. The IGP also encouraged constructive feedback from the media and the public to enhance policing efforts across the country.
