The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has called on officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to embrace physical fitness, unity, and professionalism as essential pillars of effective policing, as he officially declared open the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA) tagged “Asaba 2026.”
Speaking during the opening ceremony held in Asaba, the Delta State capital, the IGP described the Police Games as a vital institutional platform designed to promote operational readiness, teamwork, and resilience among officers across the federation.
The event drew senior government officials, security chiefs, former Inspectors-General of Police, and athletes representing various commands and formations nationwide. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Defence, highlighting the national importance attached to the Games.
In his address, the police chief emphasised that policing goes beyond enforcement duties, noting that endurance, agility, discipline, and strength of character qualities nurtured through sports are indispensable to modern law enforcement.
According to him, athletic readiness directly translates to operational effectiveness, stressing that “a fit officer is a safer officer,” while a disciplined competitor reflects the professionalism expected within the Force.
He explained that the Biennial Police Games foster unity across ranks, regions, and operational units, helping to build stronger bonds and mutual respect among personnel tasked with maintaining national security.
The IGP noted that the 2026 edition builds on the successes recorded during the 14th Biennial Police Games hosted in Ibadan in 2024, which he said reinforced institutional pride, talent discovery, and camaraderie within the Force. He expressed optimism that the Asaba Games would surpass previous editions by producing new champions and inspiring higher standards of excellence.
Addressing participating athletes, he urged them to compete with honour and sportsmanship, reminding them that they represent the ideals and values of the Nigeria Police Force both on and off the field.
He also commended the Delta State Government for hosting the Games, praising the state’s support and hospitality as a strong example of partnership in promoting youth development, sporting excellence, and national cohesion.
The IGP further expressed appreciation to former police chiefs, partners, and distinguished guests for their continued support, noting that their presence reflected the enduring legacy and tradition of the institution.
Declaring BIPOGA 2026 officially open, he expressed hope that the Games would not only produce medals and records but also renew the Force’s commitment to wellness, discipline, professionalism, and camaraderie.
He concluded by wishing participants peaceful competitions and urged athletes to uphold excellence, fairness, and unity throughout the sporting festival.
