IGP refutes viral fake news encouraging attacks on Policemen during Stop-and-Search

The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a viral claim alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, directed citizens to attack police officers during stop-and-search operations. The Force described the report as false and malicious.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on December 22, 2024, the police stated that the IGP has not issued any directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers. Instead, he called on citizens to report any cases of police misconduct through official channels, emphasizing accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

“The claim circulating online is entirely false and has no basis in reality. Citizens are encouraged to make use of official helplines, email addresses, or social media platforms to report instances of police misconduct,” the statement read.

The Police Force urged the public to utilize the following helplines to lodge complaints: +2347056792065, +2349133333785, and +2349133333786. Complaints can also be directed via email to [email protected] or through the police website at npf.gov.ng. Additionally, citizens can reach out to the Force on social media via @PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram.

The Police Force also warned Nigerians to remain cautious of fake news and verify information through credible sources before dissemination. The statement reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to fostering trust and cooperation with the public while promoting the principles of law and order.
