Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has declared her full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, firmly stated that she has no intention of returning to the Presidential Villa.
Speaking at the Women Icon Leadership Awards held in Abuja on Saturday night, an event organised by Accolade Dynamics Limited, Jonathan emphasized her commitment to the principle of rotational leadership, which she described as essential for national unity.
“I believe in turn-by-turn leadership. When it’s your turn, I’ll support you. When it’s not, step back so the country can move forward,” she said.
Addressing First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the President’s daughter, Iyaloja-General Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, Patience Jonathan pledged her unwavering support for the Tinubu administration, adding that she would join the First Lady in campaigning for 2027.
“All the way, we are with you. No shaking. Direct us, and we will follow,” she said. “I am not going back to the Villa. If you call me, I will not go. I have rest of mind, and that’s why I look young.”
Reflecting on her longstanding relationship with Remi Tinubu, Jonathan noted that their friendship dates back to their time as wives of public officeholders before either rose to national prominence.
“We worked together when I was deputy governor’s wife and later governor’s wife. Even when my husband was Vice President, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election,” she recalled. “I cannot abandon my friend. Whether you like it or not, I stand by her.”
The former First Lady also used the occasion to advocate for 35 percent affirmative action for women in governance. She criticised lawmakers for repeatedly rejecting gender equality bills, urging men in politics to embrace inclusive representation.
“We are not trying to take power from them; we are trying to support them,” she added.
Her statement come amid ongoing speculations about political alliances and realignments in the build-up to the 2027 elections.
