Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed deep concern over the spate of killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country, saying he feel personal pain whenever he received reports of violent attacks.
Akpabio spoke on Saturday at the Jos Polo Field during the formal reception of political decampees into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State. He said it is the responsibility of the government and citizens alike to work toward restoring peace and unity across the country, stressed that no foreign intervention can bring lasting stability to Nigeria.
He assured the people of Plateau State of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ending violence and rebuilding trust among communities. According to him, the President is disturbed by the level of bloodshed and is determined to ensure lasting peace.
“We are calling on God Almighty to help us at the centre to bring peace to Plateau. Anybody that will rule Plateau must be committed to peace. This is the only party that cares for you,” he said.
“I stand here representing the President, and I assure you that we will do everything possible to ensure you have peace. It is not people outside that will come and give you peace. It is we that must bring peace. We must live in peace with one another. Nigeria must have peace for progress to come.
“I cry whenever I hear the killing of a human being, whether a child or an adult. This problem did not start today; so many people have died in Plateau. Nigeria is crying out. A lot of blood has been shed, and we are not happy. The President of Nigeria is equally not happy.”
Akpabio noted that the roots of the crisis date back many years, emphasized that some of the reports widely circulated internationally were prepared as far back as 2010.
While acknowledging the undeniable scale of displacement, killings, and destruction recorded in the state, the Senate President vowed that the government would intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in Plateau and across Nigeria.
He called on the people of the state to support President Tinubu and the APC, stressing that greater development and progress would be achieved with their cooperation.
