The Niger State Government has issued a two-month ultimatum to residents of hamlets located around Kainji Lake to vacate the area for resettlement, as part of a broader security operation aimed at flushing out criminal elements.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago gave the directive on Tuesday during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, at his palace in New Bussa, following a recent terrorist attack in the Emirate.
The governor explained that the planned resettlement, to be coordinated by the Emirate Council, had become necessary to prevent collateral damage as the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, intensifies efforts to clear the forests around Kainji Lake and dismantle criminal camps operating in the area.
According to him, the operation is aimed at reclaiming the land, making it safer and more habitable for legitimate residents, while restoring peace and security in the Emirate.
Governor Bago expressed concern over the influx of unprofiled persons into the area, described it as a major security threat. He also lamented the activities of informants, which he said have continued to undermine security operations.
He urged the Emirate Council to rise to its responsibility by working closely with security agencies and governments at all levels to combat insecurity within the Emirate.
The governor extended his condolences to the Emir and the people of Borgu Emirate, particularly families of the victims of the attack, and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for their loved ones.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, assured that the Federal Government would support all initiatives targeted at restoring peace and security across the country.
He described the proposed relocation of residents as a positive step, noting that reclaiming the forest would allow it to be redeployed for beneficial community use.
In his response, the Emir of Borgu pledged the Emirate’s full cooperation with relevant authorities to identify and prosecute informants, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains paramount.
The Emir commended Governor Bago for the condolence visit and reaffirmed the Emirate’s commitment to supporting government policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
