The Federal Ministry of Interior and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) have initiated plans for a strategic collaboration aimed at fast-tracking the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across agencies under the Ministry.
The proposal was announced following a meeting between the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Executive Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, Ismaeel Ahmed, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the alignment between the Pi-CNG initiative and the Ministry’s operational responsibilities, which include oversight of 264 correctional centres, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the management of more than 4,000 kilometres of Nigeria’s borders.
Tunji-Ojo noted that integrating CNG technology into the Ministry’s operations would support vehicle conversion for security fleets, improve logistics, and strengthen border operations while promoting cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.
He added that the initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and deliver significant cost savings across agencies.
To drive implementation, the Minister directed the immediate establishment of a structured high-level working group. According to the directive, the Ministry’s Director of Joint Services will lead the team, with representatives drawn from all relevant agencies, while Pi-CNG is expected to nominate members to serve on the joint platform.
Speaking earlier, Ahmed commended the Minister’s reform-driven leadership and outlined key areas of collaboration, including fleet conversion across paramilitary agencies, the establishment of a credit facility to support vehicle conversions for personnel, and training programmes aimed at building technical capacity.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would advance Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner, renewable, and sustainable energy use while improving operational effectiveness within the Ministry.
The proposed collaboration formed part of ongoing federal government efforts to expand the use of alternative energy sources and reduce transportation costs across public institutions.
