The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for increased investment in women through education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities as the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2026.
In a statement to commemorate the day, Ike described this year’s theme, “Give To Gain,” as a strong reminder that empowering women leads to stronger families, institutions, and nations. She noted that when women are intentionally supported with opportunities and resources, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to the entire society.
Reflecting on her position as the first female chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ike said her journey demonstrates what is possible when women are given the opportunity to lead and contribute meaningfully.
According to her, empowering women in journalism improves the profession by making newsrooms more inclusive, enriching storytelling, and strengthening democratic governance through diverse perspectives.
She commended female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience, professionalism, and commitment to truth and public service, noting that many continue to break barriers by covering challenging beats, shaping public discourse, and mentoring younger colleagues.
While celebrating the achievements of women in the media industry, Ike stressed the need for deliberate actions to support the next generation of female journalists. She urged stakeholders to provide safe and supportive workplaces, expand mentorship opportunities, and ensure that women are adequately represented in decision-making spaces.
The NUJ chairman also referenced the global call by the United Nations for “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” described it as a timely reminder that achieving gender equality requires collective effort from governments, institutions, media organisations, and communities.
She further celebrated women within the NUJ and the FCT media community for their dedication and contributions, encouraging them to continue inspiring younger generations to pursue leadership and excellence in journalism.
Ike concluded by urging society to commit to giving women more opportunities, support, and recognition, stressing that when women rise, journalism and the nation as a whole also thrive.
