The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has reiterated its commitment to empowering women journalists and promoting inclusivity and professionalism within the media industry.
Chairman of the Council, Comrade Grace Ike, made this known during a capacity-building training organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, in partnership with the German Embassy, to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day in Abuja.
Represented by the Council’s Treasurer, Comrade Sandra Chukwugekwu, Ike described the training theme, “Empowering Women Journalists for Democratic Governance and Social Change,” as timely and essential. She noted that women journalists play a vital role in shaping public narratives, holding leaders accountable, and amplifying the voices of underserved communities.
She, however, highlighted challenges confronting women in the profession, including gender bias, limited access to leadership positions, and safety concerns, stressing the need for sustained interventions.
According to her, forums such as the training provide opportunities for learning, reflection, and solidarity among female journalists, while also strengthening their capacity to thrive in a dynamic media environment.
Ike reaffirmed the NUJ FCT Council’s dedication to advancing professionalism and inclusivity through targeted capacity-building initiatives and commended NAWOJ FCT, led by Chairperson Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, for organising the programme. She also lauded the German Embassy for its continued support in promoting media development and gender empowerment.
In her remarks, Ikpang said the training was designed to equip participants with practical skills in investigative reporting, ethical journalism, gender-sensitive storytelling, and leadership. She emphasised the need for women journalists to take up more visible and influential roles in shaping public discourse and promoting accountability.
Representing the German Embassy, spokesperson Mr. Felix Haala said the collaboration aimed to strengthen the capacity of female journalists and amplify their voices within Nigeria’s media landscape. He stressed that inclusive journalism is critical to national development.
Delivering a keynote address, NAWOJ National President, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, urged participants to move beyond storytelling and embrace their roles as advocates for truth and agents of societal transformation.
Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of Valor Communications, Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe, underscored the importance of investigative journalism and fact-checking in addressing misinformation, advising journalists to prioritise accuracy and credibility in their reports.
Former NAWOJ National President, Comrade Ladi Bala, called for increased adoption of gender-sensitive reporting and greater support for women in leadership roles, noting that women remain underrepresented in media narratives.
Participants described the training as impactful and expressed optimism that the knowledge gained would enhance their professional capacity and contribute to more inclusive and responsible journalism.
