The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed former Malian player and coach Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The announcement was made following the NFF Executive Committee’s endorsement on January 7, 2025.
Chelle, 47, is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed Mali’s national team and several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. Born in Côte d’Ivoire to a French father and a Malian mother, Chelle chose to represent Mali during his playing career, earned five international caps.
During his tenure as Mali’s head coach from 2022 to 2024, Chelle led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), narrowly missing a semi-final spot after a 2-1 defeat in extra time. His leadership saw Mali achieve 14 wins, five draws, and only three losses.
The Super Eagles’ head coach position became vacant following Finidi George’s resignation after disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Chelle’s primary task will be to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with critical qualifiers set for March.
