Former local government chairmen who served in Kano State between 2019 and 2022 have unanimously adopted the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, as the sole governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 elections.
The endorsement took place during a courtesy visit to Senator Barau at the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, where the former council chiefs declared that the people of Kano especially at the grassroots were eagerly awaiting his formal declaration.
A motion for Barau’s adoption was moved by Barrister Dahiru Mannir Maigari, former chairman of Rimin Gado LGA, and seconded by Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai, former ALGON chairman in the state. The motion was unanimously approved through a voice vote conducted by Alhaji Mohammed Yahaya, the former chairman of Madobi LGA.
Two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu (Sumaila) and Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai (Tsanyawa/Ghari), were in attendance at the meeting.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, Malam Ismail Mudashir, the visiting council chairmen urged Senator Barau to officially declare his intention for the governorship race without delay.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Alhaji Khalid Ishak Diso, former chairman of Gwale LGA, said Kano residents were “anxiously waiting” for Barau to make his declaration. “We recently held an event where we urged you to declare. The people of Kano are eager. Please answer the call to serve,” he said.
Also speaking, former ALGON chairman Baffa Mohammed Takai said Barau’s legislative performance and contributions to Kano’s development made him the most qualified for the job. “We are 100 per cent behind you. Insha’Allah, you will be the next governor of Kano State in 2027,” he said.
Responding, Senator Barau expressed gratitude for their support, described the former LG bosses as strong grassroots leaders. He lamented the decline in Kano’s developmental standing and pledged to restore the state’s lost glory.
“Kano used to be second only to Lagos in terms of development and commerce. Unfortunately, the state is trailing behind today due to poor leadership. We will work together to correct this and return Kano to its rightful place,” he said.
In a separate visit, stakeholders from Tsanyawa and Ghari LGAs also endorsed Senator Barau’s 2027 ambition. The motion of endorsement was moved by Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai and seconded by Hon. Aminu Yakanawa, followed by loud approval from over 100 stakeholders.
Yakanawa assured Senator Barau of massive grassroots support, declaring him “the next governor of Kano State by the grace of Allah.”
Senator Barau thanked the delegation and assured them that efforts were underway to address the security challenges affecting parts of Tsanyawa and Shanono. “We are not leaving any stone unturned. The steps being taken are not for radio announcements but for real solutions,” he said.
