National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly condemned recent defections from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), described such moves as a betrayal of trust and “the greatest political sin.”
Speaking on Saturday in Kano while welcoming new NNPP members from Takai Local Government Area, Kwankwaso criticised elected officials who abandon the party and its ideals after riding on its platform to win public office.
His comments was coming in the wake of the defection of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, alongside several federal lawmakers from the state.
“This is the highest form of betrayal in a democratic setting,” Kwankwaso stated. “I don’t know of any greater political sin than when vulnerable people vote for you rejecting deceivers and enemies of progress only for you to turn around and join those same enemies after winning.”
He warned that such actions eroded public trust in democracy and undermined the values of political loyalty and accountability.
The NNPP leader also cautioned politicians against attacking the Kwankwasiyya Movement, describing it as a formidable political force.
“Fighting the Kwankwasiyya movement is a grave mistake for any politician. One may not understand until he engages in that fight and then he’ll realize how tough it is to battle a solid wall,” he said.
Kwankwaso urged his supporters to focus on grassroots mobilisation and remain committed to service, not financial gain.
“Whether you’re in this movement with or without an appointment, whether you got a contract or not, I believe we all are in the right frame of mind and grateful to God,” he added.
Reflecting on recent events in Kano South, he alleged that some voters were induced with N2,000 and spaghetti during the last election but praised the resilience of the poor who stood firm behind the NNPP.
