A 21-year-old student from the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Mojisola Awesu, has been found dead at a refuse dump in the Aleniboro area of Ilorin.
Mojisola had been reported missing since August 9, 2024, and her remains were found on August 12, 2024, by a local resident, Mr. Olorunoje, around 7:30 a.m.
According to reports, Mojisola had received a phone call from a friend, Miss Timileyin, on August 9, inviting her to an event supposedly organized by students of Summit University, Offa, and Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.
Timileyin had introduced Mojisola to one Adebayo Happiness, a student from Summit University, who allegedly lured her to a night party under the pretense that she would be paid ₦15,000 to act as his girlfriend at the event.
Mojisola reportedly informed her roommate, Miss Blessing O., that she felt uneasy at the hotel where Adebayo had lodged her, noting that there was no sign of the supposed party. Shortly after expressing her discomfort, her phone was turned off, and all subsequent attempts by Miss Blessing to contact her were unsuccessful.
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
Ejire-Adeyemi said the discovery was made on August 12, 2024. According to Ejire-Adeyemi, a resident reported the incident to the police, prompting operatives to visit the scene and recover the remains.
The body was subsequently identified as that of one Awesu and was taken to a morgue.
The statement reads; “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public about an ongoing investigation into a case of culpable homicide reported on August 12, 2024, at approximately 7:30AM by Mr. Olorunoje of the Aleniboro area in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“According to Mr. Olorunoje, on August 11, 2024, at about 2000 hours, he was returning home from the mosque when a group of labourers approached him and informed him of a disturbing discovery.
“They had found the body of an unidentified female, approximately 25 years old, dumped on a refuse dump near Aleniboro area Ilorin, Kwara State.”
Adeyemi said following the report, a team of detectives was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the scene was carefully examined and photographed. During the initial investigation, traces of blood were found near the left ear of the deceased.
She said the body was subsequently taken to the General Hospital in Ilorin, where a medical examination confirmed that she was dead. The body has since been deposited in the hospital morgue. The deceased was later identified as Miss Awesu Mojisola.
“In light of these developments, the Kwara State Police Command has arrested suspects in connection with the case. Investigation is ongoing, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further discreet investigation,” Adeyemi said.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the gruesome murder of Mojisola, calling for a thorough investigation to unravel those behind the heinous crime.
NANS Senate President, Mr Henry Okunomo, made this known in a statement signed on Tuesday, in Kano.
“We urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation, following all leads and ensuring that those responsible are brought to book.
“The silence of the authorities is deafening, and we will not stand idly by while the lives of Nigerian students are treated with such disregard.
“We call on the Kwara State Government to take concrete steps to address the growing insecurity and violence in the state, particularly against students. The safety and well-being of students must be prioritised.
“We urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation, following all leads and ensuring that those responsible are brought to book.
“The silence of the authorities is deafening, and we will not stand idly by while the lives of Nigerian students are treated with such disregard.
“We call on the Kwara State Government to take concrete steps to address the growing insecurity and violence in the state, particularly against students. The safety and well-being of students must be prioritised.
