Dr. Doyin Abiola, a trailblazing Nigerian journalist and widow of late Chief MKO Abiola, has died at the age of 82.
She reportedly passed away peacefully at 9:15 pm on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
Renowned as the first woman to serve as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of a national daily newspaper in Nigeria, Dr. Abiola’s contributions to journalism stretched far beyond her marital ties to the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Her illustrious career began in 1969 at the Daily Sketch, where she authored the influential column Tiro, known for its fearless focus on social justice and gender issues. In 1970, she travelled to the United States to further her education, earned a master’s degree in journalism before returning to Nigeria to join the Daily Times, where she rose to become Group Features Editor.
In 1979, she earned a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York. Upon her return, she joined the Daily Times editorial board, working alongside media giants such as Dele Giwa and Stanley Macebuh.
Her career peaked in the 1980s when she was appointed the pioneer daily editor of National Concord, a publication founded by her husband. In 1986, she made history by becoming the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief the first Nigerian woman to hold such a position in a national daily.
Her leadership at National Concord spanned over three decades, during which she mentored several generations of journalists and remained a powerful voice for journalistic excellence.
Dr. Doyin Abiola, who married Chief MKO Abiola in 1981, is remembered as a symbol of resilience, a champion for women in media, and an unwavering advocate for press freedom and journalistic integrity.
