The ancient city of Kano came alive with energy and excitement on Saturday as cyclists and sports enthusiasts from across Nigeria gathered for Cycling Kano 2025, the first major competitive cycling event of its kind in Northern Nigeria.
Isa Momoh, a professional cyclist from Kaduna State, emerged champion in the male professional category, clinching the gold medal after a thrilling race. His teammate, Jacob Ishaku, secured the silver medal, while Abuja-based cyclist Joel Berry claimed the bronze with an impressive finish.
In the junior categories, Kano-based cyclists dominated the podium. Mubarak Auwal won gold in the Under-15 boys category, edging out Mujahid Hudu and Ibrahim Sani, who finished second and third respectively.
The Under-10 boys category also showcased emerging talents, with Umar Tasiu Mohd taking the gold medal ahead of Yusif Baffa and Haruna Abdullah, who settled for silver and bronze respectively. Both young cyclists expressed optimism about returning stronger for the 2026 edition.
The girls’ events equally delivered standout performances. In the Under-15 girls category, Islam Yau Abubakar claimed the gold medal, while Hauwau Mohd Abdulhamid and Amina Abdulhamid won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Speaking at the event, the Senior Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Sani Musa Danja, who led the celebrity race to flag off the competition, attributed the success of Cycling Kano 2025 to the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He commended the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the event organisers, and all stakeholders for their dedication and round-the-clock efforts in ensuring a successful outing.
Mr. Danja also expressed appreciation to corporate partners and sponsors, including Union Bank, NNPC, Peak Yoghurt, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and other supporting brands for their invaluable contributions.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including His Royal Highness, Mallam Muhammadu Sunusi II, Emir of Kano, who was represented by the Barwan Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Bello. Also in attendance was Assistant Commissioner of Police Abbas Danlami Abdullahi of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, among other notable personalities.
Cycling Kano 2025, themed “Health and Wellness,” is a state-backed initiative of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration in partnership with BrandEscort Communications. The programme seek to promote cycling as a competitive sport, encourage healthy living, empower youths, and advance environmentally friendly transportation across Kano State.
