The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has praised the Oyo kingmakers, the Oyomesi, for their decisive rejection of Governor Seyi Makinde’s nominee for the Alaafin throne, Prince Hakeem Abimbola Owoade. The Islamic human rights group commended the Oyomesi for their courage in upholding the traditions and customs of Oyo, described their stance as a bold act of speaking truth to power.
In a press release issued on Monday, January 13, 2025, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, expressed support for the kingmakers’ decision. He highlighted that five of the seven Oyomesi members, through their legal representative Adekunle Sobalolu, declared Owoade’s appointment as “null and void” and “illegal.” The Oyomesi clarified that their original recommendation was for Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, made on September 30, 2022.
Professor Akintola criticized Governor Makinde’s decision to bypass the majority’s recommendation, accused the governor of political manipulation and abuse of power. He described the situation as a “gross abuse of due process” and likened the appointment to a political “abracadabra.”
MURIC also referenced historical quotes to emphasize the implications of the governor’s actions, including Lord Acton’s observation on the corrupting nature of power and Abraham Lincoln’s views on deception. The organization warned that the legal battle over the Alaafin stool would continue beyond Governor Makinde’s tenure, asserting that justice would ultimately prevail.
“The Oyomesi have shown themselves to be the last men standing,” Professor Akintola stated. “They have refused to be intimidated, and for this, history will judge them kindly. They are the custodians of Oyo’s rich heritage, and their steadfastness is a beacon of hope for the Yoruba people.”
MURIC urged the Oyomesi to remain resolute in their decision and assured them of widespread support from the people of Oyo and beyond. The organization condemned any attempts at coercion and called for respect for traditional processes and the rule of law.
