The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged political parties in the South West to field Muslim candidates in the 2027 gubernatorial elections, citing what it described as religious imbalance in the region’s political leadership.
The group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the call in a statement issued on Monday, August 25, 2025.
MURIC noted that for the past six years, all six governors in the South West have been Christians, a situation it said has marginalized Muslims in governance and weakened inclusivity.
“With the exception of Osun and Ekiti, gubernatorial elections will take place in the South West in 2027. Ekiti election will be held in July 2026 while that of Osun State will take place in August 2026,” the statement read.
The group stressed that democracy thrives on inclusiveness and advised political parties to ensure Muslim representation at the governorship level as part of efforts to strengthen balance and participation in governance.
