The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has praised the Federal Government for its decision to suspend petrol imports, describing it as a “commendable and nationalistic step” that boosts local production.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Islamic human rights organization urged the government to complement the move by ensuring local refineries receive 100% of the crude oil they require.
Professor Akintola noted that despite the establishment of large-scale refineries such as the Dangote Refinery, reports indicate they are currently receiving only 28% to 32% of their required crude, forcing them to source the remainder through middlemen a situation he described as “disturbing and nauseating.”
“The Federal Government has the capacity to make life easier for Nigerians by making full crude supply to local refineries its cardinal policy,” MURIC said, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to issue an executive order to guarantee 100% crude oil supply.
The organization also welcomed the release of 100,000 CNG buses to ease transportation challenges, stressed that this policy should be backed by full support for local refineries to ensure sustained energy self-sufficiency in the country.
