The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on security agencies in Nigeria to either release the President of the Palestinian Community in Nigeria, Mr. Ramzi Abu Ibrahim, or arraign him in court without delay.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, and signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC expressed concern over Ramzi’s alleged arrest at his Abuja residence on Friday, July 22, 2025, noting that he has not been seen or allowed contact with his family since then.
“MURIC frowns at this Gestapo style of arrest,” Akintola said, linking the development to Nigeria’s recent security alliance with Israel. He warned that the deal could expose Muslim leaders in the country to undue security risks.
The rights group insisted that detaining Ramzi without charging him to court violates constitutional provisions, citing Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees freedom of movement, as well as international human rights instruments including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
“Detaining a suspect beyond the stipulated 48 hours without presenting him before a court of law is unlawful, illegal, illegitimate and unconstitutional,” MURIC stressed, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
The group added that adherence to these constitutional and international obligations would enhance Nigeria’s image as a civilized society and a humane government.
