The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, describing him as a threat to religious harmony in Nigeria.
In a press statement issued on April 6, 2026, and signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, the group expressed dissatisfaction with what it termed the Federal Government’s silence over its earlier demands for Amupitan’s removal.
MURIC alleged that the INEC chairman authored an 80-page legal brief which it claimed contributed to the indictment of United States of America against Nigeria on the contentious issue of alleged Christian genocide. The group described the document as “toxic” and accused Amupitan of undermining national unity.
The organization further stated that many Nigerian Muslims have lost confidence in the INEC leadership, warning that ongoing electoral processes, including any proposed voter registration or revalidation exercises, could be viewed with suspicion among Muslim communities.
According to the statement, MURIC considers Amupitan “an electoral burden” and urged the Federal Government to replace him with what it described as a “tolerant Christian” to restore balance and trust in the electoral system.
The group also criticized the INEC chairman for not responding publicly to the allegations, noting that public officials in other countries have resigned over similar controversies. It cited past resignations by international political figures as examples of accountability in governance.
MURIC concluded by declaring a vote of no confidence in the INEC chairman and insisted that his continued stay in office poses a risk to Nigeria’s fragile religious balance.
