The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended security agencies in Ikorodu, Lagos State, for swiftly intervening to prevent a potential religious crisis involving Muslim residents and Oro worshippers.
In a press statement issued on Monday, March 30, 2026, and signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group lauded the Divisional Police Officer of Ebute Ipakodo Police Division, alongside operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), for their proactive response.
MURIC disclosed that tension had risen in the area following a curfew reportedly declared by Oro worshippers, restricting movement from 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, to 12 noon on Friday, March 27. The group described the action as unilateral and unlawful, noting that it coincided with Friday congregational prayers observed by Muslims worldwide.
According to Akintola, any imposition of curfew without the approval of the state government is unconstitutional and amounts to a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights, particularly the freedom of movement as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
He argued that such restrictions are capable of triggering unrest, stressed that no religious group has the authority to impose movement bans on others.
The group further emphasized that while freedom of worship is guaranteed for all religious groups, it must not infringe on the rights of others. It called on traditional worshippers, particularly Oro adherents in Ikorodu, to exercise restraint and operate within the bounds of the law.
MURIC also urged security agencies to remain vigilant, warning that threats of further enforcement of such curfews could escalate tensions if not properly managed.
While appealing for calm, the organization advised Muslims in Ikorodu and across Lagos State not to resort to self-help or violence, but to report any grievances to appropriate authorities.
The group concluded by reiterating the need for mutual respect, tolerance, and adherence to the rule of law, especially as the country approaches a sensitive election period.
