The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Abuja Chapter, has issued an urgent appeal to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and relevant agencies to take immediate and decisive steps to address the escalating waste management challenges in Abuja.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Ustaz Yunus Salahudeen, and Public Relations Officer, Lukman Laleye Babalola, MURIC expressed deep concern over the growing accumulation of refuse across the city, describing it as a threat to public health, environmental safety, and the capital’s once-celebrated aesthetic appeal.
The group lamented that Abuja, formerly known for its cleanliness and orderliness, is fast deteriorating due to poor waste disposal and irregular collection schedules, particularly in high-density areas such as the Central Area, Wuse, Garki, Maitama, Asokoro, and the Area Councils.
MURIC called on the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other relevant bodies to prioritize waste management, emphasizing the urgent need for a reliable and frequent waste collection system. The organization also recommended the procurement and proper maintenance of waste disposal trucks, the adoption of night-time collection to minimize odour pollution and traffic congestion, and the deployment of motorized street-sweeping machines across major parts of the FCT.
MURIC urged the FCT Administration to launch widespread public awareness campaigns to educate residents on responsible waste disposal practices. Such campaigns, the group said, would help instill a stronger culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility among the populace.
The organization further called for collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and residents to develop sustainable waste management solutions while ensuring transparency and accountability in the execution and monitoring of related policies.
“We call on the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to take urgent and comprehensive steps to tackle this growing challenge. Abuja must regain its status as a clean, healthy, and thriving capital,” the statement read.
MURIC maintained that addressing the waste management crisis would not only restore the capital’s beauty but also safeguard public health and uphold Abuja’s reputation as a model city.
