The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has lent its support to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the recent call for the National Assembly to pass the Unexplained Wealth Bill into law.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 19th July 2025, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, urged lawmakers to act swiftly on the proposal, describing it as a vital step in combating corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.
Professor Akintola noted that the bill, once passed, would expose illicit wealth and compel public officers and individuals to account for their sources of income.
“This is not only a call in the right direction but also a call to action,” Akintola said. “So many kleptomaniacs, yahoo yahoo boys, kidnappers, armed robbers, etc. escape detection due to the absence of this particular law.”
He further argued that the bill would enhance accountability and reduce the burden on law enforcement agencies by making the declaration of assets and sources of wealth a legal obligation.
MURIC appealed to the National Assembly to heed the call by the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, and pass the bill without delay to rescue the nation from “moral debauchery and fiscal recklessness.”
Olukoyede had earlier urged the lawmakers to consider and pass the bill, stating that it would be a powerful tool in the fight against corruption and unexplained affluence.
