As Nigeria gear up for the 2027 general elections, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned the federal and state governments against actions capable of stifling opposition, warned that such practices could undermine democracy and fuel political unrest.
The faith-based human rights organisation gave the warning in a press statement issued on Monday, December 29, 2025, by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
MURIC stressed that Nigeria’s democracy remains fragile and requires tolerance, inclusiveness and strict adherence to the rule of law to survive and grow. According to the group, any attempt to silence opposition voices could jeopardise the credibility of the forthcoming elections.
“As we prepare for the 2027 general elections, we find it necessary to appeal to governments at both federal and state levels to desist from stifling opposition in order to avoid political violence, sustain our nascent democracy and ensure a free, fair, peaceful and credible election,” Akintola said.
The organisation likened democracy to a young sapling that must be carefully nurtured to mature into a strong institution capable of driving national development and stability.
MURIC noted that tolerance of opposing views, respect for the rule of law, freedom of expression and genuine separation of powers are critical ingredients for democratic growth. It warned that the executive arm of government must not encroach on the functions of the judiciary or the legislature.
The group also expressed concern over what it described as growing complaints about alleged intimidation of opposition figures through government agencies.
According to MURIC, opposition leaders have raised alarms over the alleged weaponisation of anti-graft agencies, suppression of dissent, involuntary defections and perceived moves toward a one-party state.
While emphasising its political neutrality, the organisation said it could not ignore developments that suggest possible infringements on fundamental human rights.
“MURIC warns against overzealousness on the part of security agencies and calls for professionalism. People should not be invited or harassed merely to please the powers that be,” the statement said.
The group further called for equal access to public spaces and facilities for all political parties, particularly opposition groups, and cautioned against emerging threats to freedom of expression and press freedom.
Quoting German theologian Martin Niemöller, MURIC warned that silence in the face of rights violations could have grave consequences for society as a whole.
The organisation concluded by calling for the adoption of liberal democracy in Nigeria, noting that the absence of a clear political ideology continues to hinder democratic consolidation.
According to MURIC, liberal democracy where individual rights are protected and political power is limited by law remain the surest path to sustainable governance, added that Nigeria has yet to fully attain that standard.
