The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a faith-based human rights advocacy organisation, has cautioned Nigeria’s security agencies against actions capable of violating citizens’ fundamental rights following the alleged attempt by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a press statement issued on Friday and signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group described the airport incident as “rowdy, disorderly and melodramatic,” urged authorities to uphold constitutional provisions and avoid conduct that could be interpreted as political victimisation.
According to MURIC, DSS operatives attempted to arrest El-Rufai upon his arrival in Abuja on Thursday, but the effort was unsuccessful due to the presence of a large crowd of supporters who had gathered at the airport to receive him.
The organisation criticised the manner of the operation, alleged that the seizure of the former governor’s international passport from his aide was unnecessary and lacked decorum, particularly for a public figure who had reportedly indicated willingness to honour any invitation by security agencies.
MURIC argued that the incident amounted to a violation of the former governor’s right to dignity as guaranteed under Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as well as his freedom of movement under Section 41.
The group further raised concerns about what it described as a perceived pattern of investigations targeting opposition politicians, called on relevant authorities to ensure fairness, transparency and adherence to due process in the discharge of their duties.
While warning against actions that could attract negative international attention, MURIC urged the ruling class and security institutions to handle political matters responsibly and respect democratic norms.
The organisation emphasised the need for dialogue, restraint and strict compliance with the rule of law in order to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic image and prevent unnecessary tensions within the polity.
