The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has expressed deep sorrow and commiserated with the government and people of Oyo State following the tragic deaths of over 35 children at a funfair held at Islamic High School, Orita Basorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, 18th December, 2024.
The event, which was organized with the noble intention of helping less-privileged children, ended in disaster when a crowd surge led to the unfortunate loss of innocent lives. The victims, primarily children, were attending the funfair, which was meant to bring joy and support to underprivileged youths in the region.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, 27th December, MUSWEN offered its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Oyo State government. The statement also extended prayers for the families affected by the tragedy, asking for divine strength and solace in this difficult time.
“The tragic loss of these young lives is deeply sorrowful. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Oyo State. May God grant them the fortitude to bear this loss,” said Prof. Muslih ‘Tayo Yahya, the Executive Secretary of MUSWEN.
MUSWEN also called on event organizers to prioritize safety measures at large gatherings, including crowd control, medical emergency provisions, and enhanced security, to prevent future tragedies.
The organization further extended its condolences to the people of Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who have also experienced similar losses due to stampedes at charitable events. MUSWEN prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and called for greater vigilance in organizing public events.
Finally, MUSWEN beseeched Allah (swt) to protect the country from further calamities and to grant peace to the land.
