The Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Sale, on Wednesday, 16th April 2025, led the official flag-off of the vaccination exercise for intending pilgrims from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), marking a key milestone in preparations for the 2025 Hajj. The event was held at the FCT Pilgrims Hajj Camp, Airport Road, Abuja.
In his address, Professor Sale emphasized NAHCON’s steadfast commitment to the health and safety of pilgrims:
“This event marks a vital step in our journey toward a successful 2025 Hajj. Ensuring the health of our pilgrims is not just a requirement; it is our responsibility. Today’s flag-off is a symbol of our readiness and proactive approach to Hajj planning. I urge all pilgrims to cooperate fully, follow health guidelines, and remain prayerful throughout this sacred journey.”
He further encouraged pilgrims to be law-abiding and participate actively in all enlightenment sessions, which are essential to equipping them with the knowledge and spiritual guidance needed for the Hajj rites.
In a symbolic display of leadership, Professor Sale administered the first dose of the vaccine to one of the intending pilgrims, underscoring the Commission’s hands-on approach and dedication to excellence.
Earlier, Dr. Dan Gazama, Director of Public Health, educated the pilgrims on the importance of the vaccines being administered, which include the meningitis vaccine, oral polio vaccine, and yellow fever vaccine all mandated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Hajj pilgrims.
“These vaccines are critical to safeguarding individual and public health. While mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or body aches may occur, they are usually short-lived. Any pilgrim experiencing prolonged symptoms should seek immediate medical attention,” Dr. Gazama advised.
He reiterated that vaccination is a prerequisite for entry into Saudi Arabia and forms part of international health regulations governing the Hajj.
Also in attendance were the Commissioner (PRSILS), Prof. Abubakar Abubakar Yagawal; Board Member representing the Ministry of Health, Dr. Saidu Dunbulwa; Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Mustapha; and several Heads of Divisions all affirming the Commission’s united stance on ensuring the wellbeing of Nigerian pilgrims.
The vaccination exercise commenced immediately after the opening addresses, executed professionally and efficiently by medical personnel. The smooth rollout boosted the confidence of the pilgrims and reflected NAHCON’s commitment to excellence in service delivery.
This Abuja flag-off signaled the beginning of a nationwide vaccination campaign across all participating states as part of NAHCON’s wider efforts to ensure a safe, healthy, and spiritually fulfilling Hajj for all Nigerian pilgrims in 2025.
