The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has recorded significant milestones in pilgrim welfare and cost management under the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Chairman of NAHCON, Prof Abdullahi Saleh Usman while briefing Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State and members of the North West Governors’ Forum, highlighted key achievements despite prevailing economic challenges. President Tinubu approved N90 billion to offset the impact of foreign exchange on 2024 Hajj fares and an additional N24 billion to clear 2023 airline debts, preventing the collapse of national carriers. Airlines were also directed to accept local currency, easing financial burdens on pilgrims.
NAHCON suspended the Central Bank of Nigeria’s credit card BTA policy and expanded the Hajj Saving Scheme, allowing intending pilgrims to save gradually. In addition, the commission refunded N5.3 billion to State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards for unprovided services in 2023.
On welfare, NAHCON provided VIP Tent ‘A+’ facilities, aligned contracts with actual pilgrim numbers, mobilized health workers, and ensured over 98 percent of essential medicines were available. Pilgrims also benefited from significant savings, including 720 Riyals on Mashair services, 200 Riyals on Madinah accommodation, 303 Riyals on transport, and reduced airfares across all regions.
“These successes reflect the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the strong support of our leaders. With continued partnership, NAHCON is committed to sustaining these gains and serving our pilgrims even better,” the Chairman said.
