The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has dismissed recent media allegations of nepotism and internal discord, asserting its commitment to transparency, due process, and staff welfare.
In response to reports suggesting that NAHCON Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, appointed his son as a Personal Assistant within the Commission, NAHCON’s Principal Information Officer, Shafii Sani Mohammed, described the claims as “unfounded and lacking any basis in truth.” He reiterated that all appointments and assignments within the Commission strictly adhere to established civil service procedures.
Addressing concerns raised by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) within NAHCON, Mohammed clarified that an internal memo recently circulated by the union was a routine measure aimed at enhancing staff welfare and should not be misconstrued as a sign of crisis. He emphasized the union’s constructive engagement with management to address internal matters.
Under the leadership of Professor Usman, NAHCON has implemented key reforms to improve the Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims. One such initiative involved revising service contracts with Saudi-based providers to ensure a seamless Hajj operation in 2025. Additionally, the appointment of Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Ali as the new Secretary of the Commission is expected to further strengthen its administrative framework.
As preparations for Hajj 2025 continue, including visa issuance and the scheduled commencement of inaugural flights on May 6, NAHCON has urged the media to uphold accuracy and fairness in their reporting. The Commission reaffirmed its openness to constructive feedback and encouraged journalists to verify information through official channels.
NAHCON called therefore on all stakeholders, including staff, the media, and the general public, to support its efforts in delivering a successful Hajj season for Nigerian pilgrims.
