The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has successfully rescued 21 minors, aged between nine and 16, from suspected traffickers and handed them over to the Niger State government. The children were intercepted by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officers at the Geidam border post in Yobe State on February 2, 2025, as they were being transported to an Islamic school in the Niger Republic.
During the handover in Abuja, NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Adamu-Bello, raised concerns over the practice, highlighted the presence of numerous Islamic schools within Niger State. She called on the state government to advise parents to enroll their children in local institutions, offering them a blend of both Western and Islamic education.
In his response, Ahmed Suleiman-Yumu, the Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian and Disaster Management, commended NAPTIP’s swift action and assured the agency that the state government would address the matter with the governor.
