The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has confirmed a rare planetary alignment set to occur on January 25, 2025, providing Nigerians with an extraordinary opportunity to witness a celestial spectacle visible to the naked eye. The event will captivate astronomy enthusiasts, skywatchers, and photographers alike.
From 5:00 pm until after dark, different planets will be visible at various times throughout the evening. The schedule is as follows:
5:00 pm – 6:30 pm: Venus will be visible in the southwest.
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm: Saturn will appear in the southwest.
8:00 pm – 10:00 pm: Jupiter will be high overhead.
10:00 pm onwards: Mars will be visible in the east.
Additionally, Uranus and Neptune will be visible with the aid of a telescope after dark.
Planetary alignments, known scientifically as syzygy, occur when three or more planets align in a straight line from Earth’s perspective. This rare phenomenon offers scientists an invaluable opportunity to study planetary movements, orbits, and the interactions between celestial bodies.
NASRDA, Nigeria’s premier space agency, continues to lead efforts in advancing space exploration and fostering public engagement with science and technology. The agency invites Nigerians to observe this once-in-a-lifetime event, while also reinforcing its commitment to furthering knowledge and innovation in space research.
A statement signed by Olayode Abdurasaq Oluwole, Personal Assistant, Strategic Communications,Office of the Director General/Chief Executive,
National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), emphasized the significance of the event.
