The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has congratulated Chief Owolabi Salis on his historic achievement as the first Nigerian-born individual to travel to space, described the milestone as a major boost to Nigeria’s space ambitions.
In a statement issued on Friday by Dr. Felix Ale, Director of Media and Corporate Communications, NASRDA commended Chief Salis for privately funding the space mission, which it described as a symbol of increasing private-sector interest in Nigeria’s space programme.
“The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) congratulates Chief Owolabi Salis on his successful space flight. He becomes the first person of Nigerian birth to travel to space,” the statement read.
NASRDA noted that Salis’s journey mark a pioneering moment, reinforcing the potential for greater private-sector involvement in space exploration and tourism.
“His achievement highlights new opportunities for private sector engagement in Nigeria’s space programme,” Dr. Ale added.
The agency also revealed that it had prior knowledge of the mission through its partner, the Space Research and Exploration Agency (SERA), and noted that the success of the flight has drawn international attention to Nigeria’s space capabilities.
While celebrating the milestone, NASRDA reaffirmed its commitment to broader space inclusion through the upcoming NASRDA-SERA collaborative mission announced in June 2024. The mission, set to take place aboard a Blue Origin flight, will provide everyday Nigerians with opportunities to participate in astronaut selection and scientific research through an open and transparent process.
“Eligibility extends to all Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above through a merit-based selection process,” Ale stated.
He added that the research priorities for the mission will be determined through public input to ensure national relevance.
“This approach ensures the mission addresses national priorities identified by Nigerian citizens,” he said.
NASRDA also disclosed that the application portal for the joint mission will open in the coming weeks, with detailed procedures to be announced soon.
The agency concluded by applauding Chief Salis’s personal commitment to space travel, noting that his bold step has energized national interest and affirmed the capability of Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to the global space economy.
“Nigeria now has both private citizens and government programmes actively pursuing space exploration. This is a defining moment in our national space journey,” the statement added.
