The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing earthquake monitoring and volcano research in Nigeria. Today, January 21, 2025, a team from the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG) Toro, led by Dr. Joseph Danasebe Dodo, Director of CGG Toro, representing the Director General, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, visited Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola to establish an Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Station.
The station, which is part of NASRDA’s Volcano Research Project, aimed to improve understanding of the Mandara Mountains, a volcanic range extending about 190 km along the Cameroon-Nigeria border.
The station will be equipped with a CERTIMUS Broadband GURALP Seismometer and Trimble R750 Monitoring, providing valuable insights into the geodynamic activities of the Nigeria-Cameroun Volcano line.
The team was warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, and the University Management. A proposed site for the station was chosen, and the Vice-Chancellor gave instant approval. Work on the station is expected to commence immediately.
This development marks a significant milestone in NASRDA’s efforts to enhance earthquake monitoring and volcano research in Nigeria, under the leadership of Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, who was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
