In a decisive move to strengthen transparency, institutional efficiency, and public engagement, the Nigeria’s National Assembly has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art newsroom, marking a new era in legislative communication and policy implementation.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Tuesday, was led by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Barrister Kamoru Ogunlana, who described the facility as more than just a structural development. According to him, the newsroom represents a strategic investment in professionalism, accurate information management, and improved citizen engagement.
“This is not a matter of business; this is the implementation of our communication policy. We must communicate clearly, accurately, and responsibly,” Ogunlana said. “In an era where communication defines credibility, this facility positions the National Assembly to discharge its responsibilities with openness and excellence.”
The Clerk highlighted that the newsroom would serve as a central hub for archiving legislative records, coordinating information, and monitoring parliamentary proceedings in real time. He added that the facility would also function as a training centre for information officers, supporting staff development and fostering professional growth.
Speaking on behalf of the Directorate of Research and Information, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Alli Umoru, described the newsroom as a strategic platform for strengthening public trust, combating misinformation, and preserving historical legislative documents, including key budget speeches and reform bills.
The contractor for the project, PEHHY Media Concepts, assured stakeholders that the facility was delivered in line with the highest technical and structural standards, emphasizing durability, operational excellence, and alignment with policy objectives rather than commercial interests.
Goodwill messages were presented by Clark to the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, and various departmental secretaries, who commended the leadership of the National Assembly for prioritizing institutional reforms, modern infrastructure, and professional communication systems.
Ogunlana also highlighted the importance of a maintenance culture, recalling the National Assembly Printing Press’s previous reputation as one of the most sophisticated in the country. He stressed that preserving facilities is a collective responsibility crucial to safeguarding institutional progress.
The commissioning event drew senior management staff, legislators, deputy clerks, permanent secretaries, heads of departments, and invited guests, all marking a significant milestone in modernizing Nigeria’s legislative communication.
The ultra-modern newsroom is expected to enhance transparency, strengthen public engagement, and elevate the National Assembly’s image by ensuring that legislative information is communicated accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner.
