President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday unveiled plans to significantly increase investment in police training, intelligence gathering and modern law enforcement systems as part of efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for improved service delivery.
The President made this known at the National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession held at Eagle Square in Abuja, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu said the initiative forms part of a broader reform agenda aimed at transforming the NPF into a world-class institution capable of tackling evolving security challenges.
He stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful progress without a secure environment, noting that the Federal Government has a moral obligation to empower security agencies.
“We will continue to support these reforms through sustained investment in training and capacity development, modern equipment and technology, improved intelligence and investigative capabilities, and better welfare and working conditions for police personnel,” he said.
The President added that his administration is determined to build a police force that is well-equipped, well-trained and motivated to confront complex security threats.
Tinubu, while reflecting on the sacrifices of police officers, said their contributions are often underappreciated despite being critical to national stability.
“Every nation is only as safe as those who keep vigil while others sleep,” he stated, warning that Nigeria cannot afford to take the sacrifices of security personnel for granted.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s vision of building a police institution anchored on professionalism, accountability, courage and public trust.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, said the force is mindful of public expectations and committed to reforms that will enhance discipline and professionalism.
Disu noted that the institution of National Police Day underscored the government’s commitment to honouring both fallen and serving officers, while also strengthening the system.
He urged officers to shun misconduct and uphold the integrity of the force, stressing that rank or connections would not shield any erring personnel from sanctions.
“Rank will not shield wrongdoing. Uniform will never excuse abuse. Authority will never override the rule of law,” he declared.
The IGP assured Nigerians that under his leadership, the force would remain disciplined, accountable and intelligence-driven, while also improving the welfare and capacity of personnel.
The 2026 National Police Day celebration featured a march past, procession and tactical displays by various police units, as well as cadets of the Police Academy, alongside top government officials, service chiefs and members of the diplomatic corps.
