Navy Chief Reaffirms Commitment to Modernisation as Defence Permanent Secretary Visits Naval Headquarters

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has reiterated the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strengthening its operational capability through strategic reforms and modernization initiatives.

He made this known on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, while receiving the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwah, during a working visit to Naval Headquarters in Abuja.

Vice Admiral Abbas stated that the Navy is focused on enhancing its effectiveness through improved acquisition and procurement processes, infrastructural development, and investment in human capital. He emphasized that these efforts are aimed at boosting operational readiness and sustaining maritime security.

The CNS also expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Defence’s continued support and strategic guidance, noting that the collaboration has significantly improved personnel welfare and enabled the deployment of skilled manpower.

He added that the strengthened partnership has contributed to the Navy’s successes in maritime security and joint operations, while ensuring alignment with national defence priorities and ongoing modernization efforts.
