The Nigerian Bar Association-Human Rights Institute (NBA-HRI) has sought collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to address critical human rights concerns, particularly those affecting children and women.
During a recent courtesy visit to the NHRC, the NBA-HRI delegation, led by the 3rd Vice President/Secretary, Zainab Aminu Garba, engaged with the Commission’s Executive Secretary to discuss pressing issues, including children in conflict with the law and in detention. The delegation emphasized the urgent need for alternative care, such as children’s homes, especially in Northern Nigeria, to provide a safer environment for vulnerable children.
The NBA-HRI also advocated for stronger measures against violence targeting women and called for the establishment of family courts to ensure the swift resolution of such cases. This initiative aligns with the NBA-HRI’s mandate to promote, protect, and enforce human rights within the framework of the law.
Speaking on behalf of the NHRC, Prof. Usongorua Udombana reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to human rights protection in Nigeria. He welcomed the proposed collaboration, recognized the necessity of alternative care systems for detained children and enhanced support for victims of gender-based violence.
