The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated and handed over an Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Ogun State.
Located within the institution’s campus, the Centre is designed to enhance students’ learning experiences while fostering digital innovation, research, and development (R&D) to support Nigeria’s economic growth.
A key highlight of the inauguration ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the effective utilization and long-term sustainability of the ICT project.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary of USPF, Yomi Arowosafe, described the Centre as a crucial step in bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusion across Nigeria.
“This Centre is not just about infrastructure; it embodies a vision, a commitment, and an investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. Under the strategic leadership of the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, the USPF remains committed to expanding ICT access to underserved communities,” he stated.
The ETC is one of USPF’s many initiatives aimed at providing digital access to unserved and underserved areas. The facility is equipped with 100 desktop computers, cutting-edge technology applications, high-speed internet connectivity, and other tools to support learning and innovation.
“With a student population of 9,300, OGITECH is one of Nigeria’s leading technology institutions, and we are proud to partner with them. This Centre will provide opportunities for students to develop skills in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity while also serving as an innovation hub for research and entrepreneurship,” Arowosafe added.
The Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, expressed gratitude to the NCC and USPF for selecting the institution as a beneficiary. He assured that the Centre would be put to optimal use for the benefit of both students and the wider community.
The USPF, established by the Federal Government of Nigeria, plays a vital role in ensuring universal access to ICT services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Through its various initiatives, the Fund continue to drive digital inclusion and economic empowerment across the country.
