The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has reacted to reports circulating on various online media platforms alleging that Cadet Stephen Kubama Gani went missing from the Academy without appropriate action by the institution.
Providing clarification on the matter, the Academy’s Public Relations Officer, Major Reuben Kovangiya, explained that Cadet Stephen Kubama Gani was admitted into the NDA as a member of the 76 Regular Course and reported for training on 26 August 2024. He noted that the cadet’s training progressed without incident until he absented himself from the Academy without official permission with effect from 28 April 2025.
According to the NDA, and in line with established procedures and extant regulations governing cadet administration, the cadet’s parents were formally notified three days after his absence. Seven days after the incident, following due administrative process, he was struck off strength. Subsequent feedback received from his parents indicated that his whereabouts could not be ascertained, prompting the Academy to commence renewed investigative procedures, which are still ongoing.
The Academy stressed that the training and administration of cadets are strictly guided by military laws, procedures and long-standing traditions as clearly outlined in the NDA Code of Conduct. It therefore urged members of the public to discountenance claims suggesting that the institution has been indifferent or inactive regarding the cadet’s disappearance.
While engagement with all relevant parties continues in an effort to achieve a positive outcome, the NDA reaffirmed that the safety and wellbeing of all cadets remain a top priority. The Academy added that adequate structures are in place to ensure accountability through regular stop checks and physical inspections.
The Nigerian Defence Academy reaffirmed its status as a bastion of military and academic excellence, founded on the enduring values of discipline, diligence, loyalty, honour and valour, and reiterated its commitment to producing highly trained, dedicated and loyal officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
