The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has called on stakeholders across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem to unite in unlocking the nation’s vast technological potential and driving its global competitiveness.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of all Chief Executive Officers of parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy at the opening of the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition 2025 in Abuja, Olatunji said the country stand at a pivotal moment where collaboration and innovation are vital to building a sustainable digital future.
Highlighting the exponential growth of the global digital economy, he noted that over 18.8 billion connected devices now serve a world population of 8.2 billion people, underscoring the transformative power of technology in business, communication, and governance.
According to him, Nigeria has both the human and material resources to lead in the digital space but must overcome sectoral fragmentation through synergy and collective action.
“Our youthful population 65 percent of whom are tech-savvy is a strategic advantage that must be harnessed. Technology is the only language they understand,” Olatunji said, urged the use of platforms like Digital Nigeria to channel youth creativity toward innovation and disruption.
Citing global disruptors such as Uber, Booking.com, and Amazon, he emphasised how technology-driven models can redefine industries without traditional assets, and encouraged Nigeria to adopt similar innovation-led strategies.
Olatunji also hailed the public hearing at the National Assembly on the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill as a landmark step toward institutionalising Nigeria’s digital transformation. The bill, he said, would provide a unified legal framework for digital governance, cybersecurity, and electronic transactions, positioning the country for measurable progress both locally and globally.
Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his early commitment to the tech ecosystem evidenced by the swift signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act Olatunji lauded Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, for his technocratic leadership and ability to unite stakeholders around a common vision.
“We must come together, cooperate, and push Nigeria into its rightful place in the global digital economy,” he declared, expressing optimism that the outcomes of the three-day conference would shape the nation’s digital future.
