The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has said the newly commissioned canine facility in Lagos will significantly boost Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs.
Marwa made this known on Friday, September 26, 2025, while commissioning the modern canine complex, built and donated to the NDLEA by the German Government.
“May I assure all stakeholders that the provision of this facility will significantly drive our fight against illicit drugs, fulfil our core mandate and secure the future of our nation. The quality of the infrastructure at the new NDLEA Dog facility is indeed commendable. It speaks volumes of the commitment, goodwill, and tenacity of our partners,” he stated.
The NDLEA boss praised Germany for its consistent support to the agency, noting that the Canine Unit has been instrumental in major drug busts, including the seizure of 74.119kg of captagon at the Apapa seaport in Lagos in 2021. He added that since its deployment, sniffer dogs have aided the seizure of over 17.9 metric tonnes of illicit substances nationwide.
Marwa stressed that the new facility would provide a conducive environment for canine personnel to sustain operational excellence, describing it as a milestone in Nigeria–Germany cooperation against drug trafficking.
German Consul General in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krull, commended the NDLEA’s successes under Marwa’s leadership, stressing that the agency’s work is not only vital to Nigeria but also to regional and global security.
“The success of NDLEA’s operation is not only helping to keep Nigeria safe but is also important for us in Germany. Trust is the most important currency in international cooperation, and we hope it remains solid for a fruitful partnership,” Krull said.
Similarly, Mr. Florian Bulow, Deputy Head of Section IZ14 BKA, Berlin, described the project as one of Germany’s longest-running police capacity-building supports. He likened the cooperation to a “marriage built on trust, shared goals, and teamwork,” adding that the canine project is proof of what can be achieved through joint efforts.
The construction of the canine facility began in August 2024 and was completed on schedule through the support of the German Federal Criminal Police Office and its partners in Berlin, Saxony, and Sachsen-Anhalt.
