The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of child rights across Nigeria.
This declaration was made during a courtesy visit by officials of the Child Dream Initiative (CDI) to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, the Head of the Monitoring Department, Mr. Benedict Agu, reiterated the Commission’s resolve to prioritize the rights and welfare of women and children. He commended the full domestication of the Child’s Rights Act, 2003, by all 36 states of the federation and called for comprehensive implementation of the law at all levels.
Mr. Agu also emphasized the importance of the Universal Basic Education Act, 2004, as a key tool in advancing every Nigerian child’s right to quality education. He urged parents and relevant stakeholders to actively support its implementation.
Earlier, CDI Programme Manager, Stella Udobong, who led the delegation, sought strategic collaboration with the Commission to tackle increasing child rights violations, especially in communities affected by insecurity and displacement.
In a symbolic gesture of advocacy, students who accompanied the team delivered passionate messages, calling on the government to intensify efforts in protecting children’s rights and encouraging their peers to pursue their dreams despite societal challenges.
