The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the killing of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano State, describing the incident as a grave violation of the right to life.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, reportedly involved unknown assailants who attacked the victims at their residence. The development has sparked widespread concern and grief within the community.
Reacting to the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, said the act constituted a serious breach of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international human rights instruments to which the country is a signatory.
Dr. Ojukwu described the attack as an affront to human dignity and a crime that must not go unpunished, stressing that the sanctity of human life must be upheld at all times.
The Commission called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice, warning that impunity for violent crimes poses a threat to societal peace.
He also extended the Commission’s condolences to the family of the victims, the people of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the Kano State Government, assured them of the NHRC’s solidarity during the period of mourning.
The NHRC reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria and expressed its readiness to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and justice.
The Commission urged all stakeholders to work together to promote peace, protect lives, and build a society founded on justice and respect for human dignity.
